MaxLinear MxL265 Full-Spectrum CaptureTM Receiver Powers SMC’s DOCSIS® 3.0 Cable Gateway Family

August 29, 2013
  • SMC’s VeloxiteTM Family Expands as the D3G1604W Gateway Achieves DOCSIS 3.0 Certification with Design Based on MxL265 16-Channel Digital Cable Front End

MaxLinear, Inc. (NYSE: MXL), a leading provider of integrated radio frequency (RF) and mixed-signal integrated circuits for broadband communications applications, today announced that SMC Networks, a leading global provider of customer premises equipment (CPE) for the complete digital home, has selected the MxL265 Full-Spectrum Capture (FSCTM) digital cable front-end receiver for its new family of DOCSIS 3.0 cable modems and gateways.

First in SMC’s new 16x4 cable gateway family, the Veloxite D3G1604W, recently achieved certification from Cable Labs®. The D3G1604W is a high-speed wireless data gateway designed using the MxL265 cable tuner capable of receiving up to 680Mbps via 16 bonded downstream channels. The D3G1604W also features flexible Wi-Fi configurations, from Dual Band Dual Concurrent 3x3 Wi-Fi, to Single Band 2.4GHz 3x3 or 2x2, as well as the latest in 802.11ac technology.

“Working with SMC to achieve DOCSIS certification on its new family of DOCSIS 3.0 products is another exciting milestone for MaxLinear,” said Brian Sprague, MaxLinear’s Vice President and General Manager for Broadband and Consumer Products. “This is a great example of the value MaxLinear’s Full-Spectrum Capture receivers bring to OEMs developing next-generation cable modem and gateway products.  We are looking forward to supporting SMC as they expand multimedia and data bandwidth in the home.”
“SMC engineered Veloxite using the industry’s best-in-class solutions to achieve outstanding product performance,” said SMC’s EVP & COO Joe Wytanis.  “The collaboration with MaxLinear extends from the Veloxite 8x4 wireless gateways to the 16x4 and 24x8 product lines.”

Cable modem and gateway markets are evolving rapidly as cable providers strive to meet burgeoning consumer demand for bandwidth and content.  MaxLinear’s Full-Spectrum Capture cable receivers deliver on this bandwidth need and facilitate more efficient distribution of video and IP services, faster download speeds, lower power and lower cost designs.

Technical Highlights
Based on MaxLinear’s industry-leading low-power 40nm CMOS process technology, the MxL265 offers a monolithic digital cable front-end with integrated low-noise amplifier (LNA) and signal conditioning functions combined with a Full-Spectrum Capture receiver.  In full 16-channel receive mode of operation, the MxL265 provides up to 800Mb/s downstream speeds and consumes less than 110 mW per channel, eliminating the need for expensive heat removal components such as fans, heat shields and heat sinks inside customer equipment.

Additionally, the MxL265 supports remote spectrum analyzer functions that report network health and performance parameters, which can be used by cable operators in managing and troubleshooting their networks.  This innovative feature allows cable operators utilizing SMC’s new Veloxite gateways to avoid costly technician visits to customer homes by remotely monitoring and diagnosing potential problems with customer premises equipment.

The MxL265 16-channel DOCSIS 3.0 digital cable receiver is available now in a standard 7mm X 7mm QFN package.  Please contact MaxLinear for ordering information.
