MaxLinear, Inc. (NYSE: MXL), a leading provider of integrated radio frequency (RF) and mixed-signal integrated circuits for broadband communications applications, today announced the MxL268, a 32-channel, Full-Spectrum Capture™ (FSC™) receiver for next-generation DOCSIS 3.0 cable applications.
Delivering up to 1.6 Gbps throughput, the MxL268 is an ideal fit for cable operators looking to exceed speeds offered by their fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) competitors while maximizing investment in their existing infrastructure. With its FSC technology, the MxL268 captures the full 1 Gigahertz (GHz) cable spectrum, enabling cable operators to configure their systems flexibly to meet different consumer requirements for different combinations of data speeds and number of video channels.
The new device will be part of a platform demonstration with Intel at IBC 2014 in Amsterdam that combines the Intel Puma™6 32-channel DOCSIS 3.0 SoC with the MxL268 receiver in a platform bonding 32 DOCSIS 3.0 channels. The demonstration will be located in Intel’s booth in Hall 14, location L20. IBC 2014 runs from Sept. 12 – 16.
The MxL268 is pin compatible with MaxLinear’s MxL265 16-channel and MxL267 24-channel receivers, simplifying the effort of migrating designs to 32 channels. Manufacturers can reuse their investment in their Puma6 gateway designs by simply replacing the receiver with the MxL268.
The receiver is capable of simultaneously receiving any combination of 32 channels located arbitrarily inside the cable spectrum. Like other MaxLinear FSC cable receivers, the MxL268 features significantly reduced power consumption for gateways and STBs, minimized PCB footprint, reduced external RF bill-of-materials, and simplified design of customer platforms requiring multiple channel access.

Based on MaxLinear’s industry-leading, low-power 40 nm CMOS process technology, the MxL268 offers a monolithic digital cable front-end with integrated LNA and signal conditioning functions combined with a Full-Spectrum Capture receiver. In full 32-channel receive mode of operation, the MxL268 provides up to 1.6 Gbps downstream speeds and consumes less than 75mW per channel, eliminating the need for expensive heat removal components such as fans, heat shields and heat sinks inside customer equipment.
The MxL268 supports remote spectrum analyzer functions that report network health and performance parameters, which can be used by cable operators in managing and troubleshooting their networks. This innovative feature allows cable operators to avoid costly technician visits to customer homes by remotely monitoring and diagnosing potential problems with customer premises equipment.
The MxL268 is compliantwith Energy Star and the European Code of Conduct for Digital TV Services and Broadband Equipment requirements for both standby and operating modes.
The device exceeds requirements for DOCSIS and video applications, including the stringent test scenarios under SCTE40 plant loading and impairment conditions. The device supports a serial interface to a DOCSIS 3.0 modem, and has an integrated single-channel tuner for low-power operation.
