The 14-channel XRT83SL314 and XRT83L314 LIUs are targeted at solving the data stream conversion challenge between T1/E1 and DS3/E3. In a METRO environment, a conventional multiplexer must multiplex/demultiplex 28 T1, or 21 E1 channels into a single DS3/E3 signal. Using combinations of eight-channel or four-channel devices can accommodate the 28-channel requirement, but at the expense of not fully utilizing all channels (32 channels in a 4x 8-channel configuration), or wasting precious board space. Exar's 14-channel devices give OEMs maximum design flexibility, and with the addition of R3 Technology clearly distinguish the parts in the marketplace. The devices are targeted at Multi-Service Provisioning Platforms (MSPPs), media gateways, routers, and frame relay access devices.

R3 TechnologyTM

Exar's R3 TechnologyTM (Reconfigurable, Relayless, Redundancy) delivers key innovative features to customers designing T1/E1/J1 interface cards. The devices are Reconfigurable with integrated terminations supporting all common T1/E1/J1 line impedance's (75/100/110/120 ohms) enabling customers to build one board with a single bill-of-materials. Also, the series employs Relayless Redundancy eliminating the need for external relays for 1:1 and 1+1 applications by establishing a back-up channel or card that can be brought on-line in the event of failure.

Product Details

The 14-channel XRT83SL314 (Short Haul) and XRT83L314 (Short Haul/Long Haul) contain two crystal-less jitter attenuators per channel that can be simultaneously configured in both the transmit and receive paths. The devices meet or exceed popular telecom specifications such as ITU G.703, G.775, ANSI T1.402. and Bellcore GR-499 core. Also, because of their inherent flexibility and standards compliance, the LIUs can be used in conjunction with any of Exar's T1/E1/J1 framers, or with a customer's specific device. Other features include a parallel microprocessor bus supporting both synchronous and asynchronous microprocessor interfaces for Motorola, Intel and MIPS processors. In addition, they include an on-chip frequency multiplier that can generate a T1 or E1 master clock signal from a variety of external sources. Also for T1/E1/J1 short haul environments clock rates are selectable through software, and there is no need to alter or change components.

The devices have on-chip transmit short-circuit protection and limiting which protects line drivers from damage on a per channel basis. This coupled with a QRSS pattern generator for detection and testing, enables customers to be alerted when data transmission problems occur. Both devices are in 304-lead TBGA packages and have 250mW per channel maximum power dissipation in a 3.3V power supply operation.
