MaxLinear Teams with SES on SAT>IP ICs Based On Full Spectrum Capture™ Satellite Technology

September 07, 2012
  • New Satellite Multi-Channel Receiver IC's from MaxLinear Will Support the Full 4.8 GHz Satellite Spectrum

MaxLinear, Inc., (NYSE: MXL), a leading provider of integrated radio frequency (RF) and mixed-signal integrated circuits for broadband communications applications, and SES, a global leader in satellite communications with a fleet of 51 geostationary satellites, today announced at the IBC 2012 trade show that the two companies are collaborating on multichannel satellite receiver ICs for next generation satellite-to-IP (SAT>IP) systems.

The IC product family will combine SAT>IP technology with MaxLinear's Full-Spectrum Capture™ (FSC™) technology to provide ultra low-power, high-performance and cost effective solutions for satellite operators to meet the ever-increasing consumer demand for rich multimedia content on any device.

SES has developed the SAT>IP standard for converting satellite-delivered programming into Internet Protocol (IP) accessible content. This allows subscribers to watch their satellite content on IP-connected devices such as smartphones, tablets, PC's, and smart TVs – with different programs available on different devices at the same time.

MaxLinear's Full-Spectrum Capture™ (FSC™) technology enables single-chip multi-channel receivers that can capture the entire satellite broadcast spectrum. The FSC™ technology was pioneered by MaxLinear and first implemented in several multi-channel front-end products for cable systems that capture the full 1 GHz cable spectrum. MaxLinear has scaled the technology to deliver unprecedented single-chip solutions that support the full 4.8 GHz satellite spectrum.

"Full-Spectrum Capture technology is at the cusp of revolutionizing cable TV gateway markets and we're excited to extend MaxLinear's market leadership into the satellite market," said Yves Rasse, Senior Director, Consumer Product Line. "Partnering with SES gives MaxLinear direct access to the leading innovator in SAT>IP technology, and will enable aggressive deployment of this new technology into the marketplace."

"SAT>IP is a significant advance in satellite in-home signal distribution technology and means that consumers can now watch satellite delivered TV programs in the highest picture quality on any of their mobile and computing devices," said Thomas Wrede, Vice President Reception Systems at SES. "Adding MaxLinear to the SAT>IP ecosystem is significant for our system partners because of the company's track record with high-performance, low power technology."
