ZCorum and MaxLinear to Host Live Hangout on Full-Spectrum Capture

July 10, 2014
  • Scott Helms and Jim Koutras will discuss a DOCSIS-supported feature now available in newer CPE that allows for remote capture of spectrum passing through the device.

ZCorum and MaxLinear announced today that they will be holding a Google Hangout to discuss features available in newer cable modems and set top boxes that allow for the capture and display of all channels passing through the device. The Hangout, which will air on July 14th at 4:00 PM EDT, can be viewed on ZCorum’s Business of Broadband blog. Itwill feature a conversation with ZCorum’s Vice President of Technology, Scott Helms and MaxLinear’s Director of Product Marketing, Jim Koutras.

“This can be a game-changer for the industry,” said Helms, who will talk about the benefits of this new capability and what can be done with a software-based solution for spectrum analysis. “Cable providers can now use software and an inexpensive app to remotely view spectrum passing through CPE without the need for expensive probes, and without having to drive to the customer’s location to connect up a meter.”

Koutras will be covering hardware compatibility during the discussion. MaxLinear makes the tuners in devices using Intel Puma 5 and Puma 6 modem processors, and they have been supporting this capability for some time. “There are literally millions of devices with MaxLinear receivers in the field today that already support remote network monitoring”, said Koutras. “Our goal is to communicate the power of this feature so more providers will investigate how it can benefit their operation.”

Helms and Koutras will take questions via Twitter and Google+ during the live Hangout. After the Hangout has aired, a recorded version will be available for viewing on the same Business of Broadband post.
