
I was reading a recent Dell ’Oro industry forecast that indicates that DOCSIS 4.0 and fiber expansion investments are entering a new spending cycle that is expected to peak in 2028, while escalating residential gateway costs remain a concern for operators.
It reinforced a question I hear frequently from service providers around the world: As operators prepare to spend capital to improve bandwidth and consumer experience, how can they phase the spend across multiple business cycles as opposed of rapid spend ahead of revenue growth? And how do they ensure their product investments don’t become obsolete with supply chain changes (ex: DDR memory) and technology transitions?
DOCSIS 4.0 won’t happen overnight. In fact, I’m seeing the transition from DOCSIS 3.1 to 4.0 as an evolution with both economic and technological considerations. They also need platforms that reduce operational complexity, lower power consumption, ‘Secure by design’ and enable faster introduction of differentiated broadband services.
I believe the transition to multi-gigabit services should not require operators to choose between delaying multi-gigabit consumer experience or absorbing unviable economics with large upfront investments. Operators should be able to invest at their pace and should be able to offer improved experiences to consumers who need it first. At the same time, DOCSIS 4.0 introduces compelling opportunities. Symmetrical multi-gigabit speeds, expanded capacity, and enhanced customer experiences will help operators compete effectively in increasingly fiber-intensive markets. However, realizing those benefits requires thoughtful planning around customer-premises equipment, network readiness, and deployment timing.
In my experience, the operators will be more successful if they view this transition not as a technology refresh, but as a business transformation that balances customer demand, competitive differentiation, and capital efficiency.
Looking Beyond the Upgrade Cycle
The broadband industry has always evolved through a combination of innovation and pragmatism. DOCSIS itself has consistently adapted version after version to deliver higher speeds, greater efficiency, and new service capabilities, and defied any predictions to the contrary.
That is why I believe the transition to DOCSIS 4.0 is about much more than a network upgrade. It is an opportunity to create a broadband platform capable of supporting the next wave of innovation, from multi-gigabit connectivity and Wi-Fi 8 to edge AI and personalized AI experiences. Operators that approach this evolution strategically will be best positioned to meet growing subscriber expectations while maximizing the return on their infrastructure investments.
For operators navigating this transition, the goal is clear: build networks that are not only faster, but also more economically sustainable, operationally efficient, and ready for whatever comes next.
DOCSIS isn't dead. It's evolving. And for many operators, that evolution remains one of the smartest paths to the multi-gigabit future.
